Already at the beginning of his essay on “The Ethic of Truths”, the former Maoist Alain Badiou makes clear that “what there is […] cannot define” the “circumstances of a truth” under which the human animal enters the process of becoming a subject (pp. 40-41). He then proceeds to postulate that this only happens or is rather “convoked” by “something extra, something that happens in situations as something that they and the usual way of behaving in them cannot account for” (p. 41), which he calls an “event”. His examples for this term are somehow obscure (“the creation of Topos theory by the mathematician Grothendieck”! – [p. 41]), but it is clear that he means pivotal moments in the life of a given individual, of a discipline of knowledge, or of a political body. And this is exactly why I wrote the words “the former Maoist” a couple of lines ago: to me, this distinction between life as it normally is and the “events” that actually constitute the subject and compel it to “fidelity” (p. 42) and thus to the “immanent break” of the truth (or of “a truth”) is a residue of Badiou’s past belief in Revolution. It even reminds me, in fact, of the Marxist axiom that class consciousness raises exponentially in “pre-revolutionary situations”, which by the way is one of the reasons why revolutions (will!) happen, according to Marxists.
Why is it so “clear” (p. 41), for instance, that ce qu’il y a concerns only the animal part of the human animal or of the some-one, but not of the subject him/herself? Interestingly, Badiou writes that “what arises from a truth process […] cannot be communicated” but has to “be something that happens to you” (p. 51), a notion that is similar both to the concept of the Matrix in the Matrix trilogy and to the way people who have been really convinced of something or, better still, who have been in a sect (say, in a Trotskyist cell in Germany or in a Maoist group in France), talk about their experiences.
I remember, for example, how I personally used to tell a good friend of mine, who had the dubious privilege of always having been a skeptic all his life (and since many years a post-structuralist skeptic at that), that there is nothing compared to the candid belief that one is indeed working for the good not only of the country but of the world, that what one thinks and does matters, and that one is part – a conscious part – of something infinitely bigger than oneself. In other words, that whether or not one was “right” in believing (and by the time I was having the conversation I already knew that I certainly hadn’t been “right”, or at least that what I believed in wasn’t “right”), there was no way to explain to outsiders the feeling of having actually been able to touch, however barely and however futily, the absolute beauty, the truth, or “the Immortal” that stems from “the voice of the Master”, as Badiou puts it on p. 52. Needless to say, he said he believed what I was saying but thought he was better off without having had the actual experience of “It”.
Why this essay led me to such a reminiscence as the one above is still unclear to me, even though other aspects of the text, which I will leave undiscussed here, also point in this interpretational direction (say, the section on “ascetism” [pp. 53 ff.], a concept so clearly related to “revolutionary” movements). Maybe I just didn’t get it or was desperate to write something at all. Or maybe I beware Masters and truths to the point of over-interpreting, or even misinterpreting, an attempt to build an ethics of truth with an ostensible universal value as an attempt to deal with absolutes like “universal” or, more faithfully to Badiou’s terms, like “Immortal” and “truth”, again.

Today, I went to the beach front with my kids. I found a sea shell and gave it to my 4 year old
daughter and said “You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear.” She put the shell to
her ear and screamed. There was a hermit crab inside and it pinched
her ear. She never wants to go back! LoL I know
