Del mal gusto visionario al mal gusto como ‘way of life’: John Waters y el fin del ‘American century’ (I)

Conocí el cine de John Waters en los primeros años noventa, es decir tarde en su carrera pero relativamente temprano en mi propio desarrollo personal, cuando mi afición por el cine me llevó a ir a ver Cry Baby (1990) a los trece años de edad. No voy a decir que, después de eso, todo cambió, porque no fue así; incluso después de un par de años, cuando pillé Hairspray (1988) en la televisión, me pareció una película chistosa y altamente… extraña, nada más, aunque recuerdo que me impresionó la manera en que describe, como sin querer queriendo y sin mayores reverencias, el inicio de los Sixties como son los Sixties en el imaginario occidental: época de rebeliones, de expansión de derechos, de explosión de expresiones culturales y demás.

Fue solamente mucho después, al tener la suerte de poder ver Pink Flamingos (1972) en función de medianoche (como se la debe ver en un mundo ideal) en un cine de Hamburgo con freaks diversos en el público y motivado por el morbo producido por mis lecturas sobre la archifamosa escena final de la caca de perro, todo un “Rosebud” perverso para una generación (la del punk) que cambiaría los límites de lo pensable y de lo decible, que me hice fan de Waters en serio.

Desde entonces, he devorado todas sus películas de 1970 para acá, leído todos sus libros (que no son pocos y que son, a riesgo de ser hiperbólico, realmente geniales) y consumido tantas entrevistas en la prensa y en Youtube como me ha sido posible encontrar. Si Waters es un auteur, entonces, y estoy convencido de que lo es, yo me considero, un poco inmodestamente, un connoiseur.

Por eso, al tener que entregar una breve columna de opinión sobre algún tema cultural para empezar a contribuir con la por otro lado excelente ViceVersa Magazine, creí que sería un detalle empezar con algo sobre él y su obra, máxime que en este año será galardonado con el premio del que se habla en el artículo al que lleva el siguiente link, circunstancia que me sirvió como coartada:
