El ensayo “Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema”, escrito por la feminista británica Laura Mulvey en 1973 y publicado en 1975 en la revista Screen, así como republicado luego en básicamente toda antología de teoría y crítica feminista de cine, es, salvando las distancias, uno de esos textos que, como El manifiesto comunista de Karl Marx y Friedrich Engels, La interpretación de los sueños de Sigmund Freud, The Feminine Mystique de Betty Friedan o el episodio de Dykes to Watch Out For de Alison Bechdel del que procede el Bechdel test, así como, para quienes habitan en el lado contrario del espectro político-cultural, La riqueza de las naciones de Adam Smith o Atlas Shrugged de Ayn Rand, explica de manera tan plausible y tan absoluta un fenómeno que uno intuía pero al que no le podía dar nombre que, después de su lectura, la realidad literalmente se convierte en otra y aparece como más nítida, más aprehensible, más nefasta acaso pero en todo caso más real. En breves palabras, luego de haber leído a Mulvey, uno ya no puede dejar de notar que, efectivamente, el cine narrativo, tanto comercial como de autor o incluso supuestamente artístico o underground, independientemente de las intenciones de sus creadores, es un dispositivo en el que la mirada masculina está internalizada y en el que la mujer es objeto de esa mirada.
No importa si uno está de acuerdo con la tesis de Mulvey o no, o si uno la comparte hasta sus últimas consecuencias o no (tampoco si uno entiende el argot psicoanalítico en el que dicha tesis se basa), sino solamente que se trata de un ensayo que cambia una visión del mundo y que, para sus adeptos, revela las presuntamente “verdaderas” cualidades de dicho mundo, cual píldora roja de The Matrix. Pocas son las obras que tan plausible y consecuentemente, pero también tan sintéticamente, se erigen como reinterpretaciones totales de la realidad y que, al reinterpretarla, la mueven.
Estoy convencido de que Sofia Coppola, una de las más aclamadas directoras de la actualidad -y de toda la historia, a decir verdad- leyó en algún momento “Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema” o alguna de sus múltiples adaptaciones o aplicaciones en estudios de cine, de literatura y de la cultura en general, así como de que tenía en la cabeza, consciente o inconscientemente, lo inevitable de la “male gaze” al filmar su película The Virgin Suicides (1999).
Lo que no significa que esta película, una obra maestra de ese de por sí gran florecimiento de creatividad cinematográfica que fue el cine independiente de Estados Unidos en la década de los noventa del siglo XX, sea un ensayo o una reflexión filosófica o teórico… nada más alejado de la verdad. Se trata, más bien, de un poema hipnótico (no se me ocurre otra palabra) que hace visible un tono de saudade, un despertar sexual adolescente y una cierta tensión inherente a las relaciones entre los sexos y al predominio de la mirada masculina que, más que discutir el asunto u ofrecer conclusiones al respecto, lo presentan como una pulsión inmanente a la condición humana del fin de siècle.
Wow, suena súper pretencioso pero no pretende serlo tanto. Es un filme que ataca directamente algo que no es propiamente ni la razón ni el corazón, sino capaz in between, y que hay que ver para creer que es posible en su sublime etereidad.
