Si algo resulta de entrada sorprendente a la hora de acometer la tarea de aplicar el método desarrollado por Gérard Genette en Discours du récit (1972) a los cuentos “El hombre muerto” y “Las moscas”, escritos por Horacio Quiroga y publicados en 1920 y 1933, respectivamente, es la diferencia radical entre estas narrativas latinoamericanas cortas y el objeto de análisis genettiano, que es nada menos que la interminable A la recherche du temps perdu, de Marcel Proust. En efecto, mientras la prosa proustiana es enrevesada y excesiva, la de Quiroga es seca y, de hecho, casi árida, desprovista de toda adjetivación “innecesaria” (recordemos que el séptimo mandamiento del “Decálogo del perfecto cuentista”, escrito por el mismo uruguayo, dice precisamente que es así como debe ser la prosa: “No adjetives sin necesidad. Inútiles serán cuantas colas de color adhieras a un sustantivo débil. Si hallas el que es preciso, él sólo tendrá un color incomparable. Pero hay que hallarlo”[1]). Asimismo, mientras el ejemplo elegido por Genette es uno que muy evidentemente se presta para constituir el motivo de una reflexión sobre mecanismos narrativos relacionados con el tiempo y la cronología, los cuentos del uruguayo que nos ocupan aquí parecen, a primera vista, ser relativamente sencillos en este sentido, así sea sólo por su inusitada brevedad y por la radicalidad con la que Quiroga lleva la unidad de tiempo y la unidad de lugar a sus últimas consecuencias. Como no podía ser de otra manera, sin embargo, la parte clave de la oración previa es “a primera vista”.
Así, en el caso de “El hombre muerto” tenemos una historia (en el sentido genettiano del término) que no puede menos que ser considerada mínima: un hombre resbala sin gloria en el campo, se clava su machete en el vientre y muere. Ahora bien, es en el plano de lo que para Genette es propiamente la “narrativa”, es decir el discurso en sí y no la mera “historia”, que este cuento adquiere su complejidad, y más específicamente –al menos para los efectos de este ensayo– en los aspectos temporales de la narrativa[2]. Como si se tratara de un intencional mentís a la afirmación genettiana según la cual “comparing the ‘duration’ of a narrative to that of the story it tells is a trick[y] operation, for the simple reason that no one can measure the duration of a narrative” (86), por ejemplo, Quiroga se empeña en datar con extrema precisión los por otro lado escasos “eventos” de su cuento: entre que el hombre cae y se da cuenta de que va a morir “[n]o han pasado dos segundos: el sol está exactamente a la misma altura; las sombras no han avanzado un milímetro” (10); “[e]s el muchacho que pasa todas las mañanas hacia el puerto nuevo, a las once y media” (11); “[d]esde hace dos minutos su persona, su personalidad viviente, nada tiene ya que ver ni con el potrero […] ni con el bananal. […] Hace dos minutos: se muere” (12); y finalmente “[d]eben haber pasado ya varios minutos… y a las doce menos cuarto […] se desprenderán hacia el bananal su mujer y sus dos hijos” (13)[3]. En otras palabras, en este cuento la historia es notablemente más corta que la narrativa, muy especialmente al principio, cuando las reflexiones del narrador sobre la muerte y lo efímero de la condición humana tienen lugar en el transcurso de, literalmente, dos segundos (después la voz se decanta por una focalización progresivamente más personalizada [Genette 189], en la que el protagonista recuerda su pasado y piensa en su familia mientras pasan los quince minutos hasta que su hijo se ponga en camino).
En cuanto a “Las moscas”, es importante recalcar que ya en su subtítulo se anuncia que se trata de una “Réplica del hombre muerto” (185), con lo que se juega tanto con el significado múltiple de la palabra “réplica”, puede ser una “respuesta” o “refutación” pero también una “copia”, como con lo ambiguo de ese “del”, que no deja claro si se trata de una referencia al cuento anteriormente reseñado o al protagonista mismo de éste. Sea como sea, lo cierto es que estamos, nuevamente, ante un cuento breve pero cuya historia, en una primera lectura –sin incluir, pues, por falta de espacio, y al igual que en la consideración del cuento anterior, un análisis más prolongado de los eventos o las anacronías [Genette 48] más evidentes, que pertenecen más al terreno del “orden” que al de la “duración”–, lo es todavía más. Un hombre cae en el campo, se rompe la columna vertebral y muere. No obstante, en esta ocasión Quiroga omite casi toda mención del tiempo transcurrido en la diégesis (aparte de la doble repetición de la palabra “instante” [185]) y prefiere, quizás sorprendentemente, especificar la fecha de procesos naturales y sociales muy anteriores o muy posteriores a la caída del protagonista, como para inscribirlo en un devenir histórico mucho mayor a su propia vida individual (“los hombres tumbaron el año anterior este árbol […] Esto era el invierno pasado” y ahora “las lluvias se sucederán mojando corteza y ropa, y los soles secarán líquenes y cabellos, hasta que el monte rebrote y unifique árboles y potasa, huesos y cuero de calzado” [185]) y que, de hecho, termina en un plano metafísico completamente ausente de “El hombre muerto”, o al menos ausente de forma explícita (“Siento que fluye de mí como la vida misma, la ligereza del vaho ambiente, la luz del sol, la fecundidad de la hora. Libre del espacio y el tiempo […] Puedo ver, lejanísimo ya, como un recuerdo de remoto existir” [187]). Paradójicamente, entonces, en este cuento la historia contada es mucho más corta que la narrativa pero, si incluimos las anacronías y, de hecho, la historia posible, su longitud excede a la de cualquier vida humana y, quizás, a la de la especie.
Vemos, entonces, y para finalizar, que en estos dos cuentos de Quiroga aparentemente tan similares, por un lado, y aparentemente tan sencillos en el plano temporal (al menos si son contrastados con A la recherche…), por el otro, existen puntos de divergencia fundamentales, así como cuestiones relacionadas con la duración y con las analepsias y prolepsias en el sentido genettiano, que merecen ser analizadas con mayor detenimiento. Más allá de eso, salta a la vista que un análisis limitado a la temporalidad no alcanza siquiera a empezar a explorar la complejidad de “El hombre muerto” y “Las moscas”, ya que los dos son textos que presentan problemas de focalización y voz narrativa completamente fascinantes (piénsese sólo en el final del primero, en el que la voz meramente focaliza la narración por medio del caballo, en comparación con el final del segundo, en el que la voz misma pasa a las moscas) y que, desgraciadamente, no pueden ser más que someramente mencionados en el contexto de un ensayo tan breve como éste.
