Traducciones intergeneracionales (III): De cómo Sinéad O’Connor logró influenciar a Prince

Quién lo iba a imaginar hace algo más de un cuarto de siglo, cuando la revista Rolling Stone, ya en franca decadencia pero décadas antes de poner a Kim Kardashian en su portada, nombraba a Sinéad O’Connor “Artist of the Year”, pero hoy en día la irlandesa es considerada mayoritariamente, por quienes todavía la recuerdan, un one hit wonder (o, para traducir la expresión alemana que se usa para one hit wonder y que es, por otro lado, significativamente más despectiva, una “mosca de un día”). Sin haber hecho un estudio empírico al respecto, me atrevo a aventurar que somos relativamente pocos quienes recordamos alguna canción de ella aparte de la mega-exitosa “Nothing Compares 2 U”, así como probablemente menos aún quienes conocemos algún álbum suyo que no sea aquel en el que dicha canción apareció, titulado I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got (1990). Gran parte de mi generación, acaso, recuerda más a O’Connor por su actitud iconoclasta y por el escándalo que suscitó al romper una foto del Papa Juan Pablo II durante una presentación en vivo en Saturday Night Live en 1992 que por cualquier aspecto de su carrera propiamente musical que no sea “Nothing Compares 2 U”. Los Millenials seguramente la conocen por la –por cierto muy instructiva– polémica que mantuvo con Miley Cyrus a raíz del video de esta última de su single “Wrecking Ball” (2012), en el que Cyrus referencia y hace un claro homenaje a O’Connor pero, también, aparece totalmente desnuda, o incluso por un bizarro incidente protagonizado por O’Connor cuando, en mayo de 2016, desapareció por 32 horas durante las cuales sus problemas de salud mental se convirtieron en la comidilla de la prensa amarillista internacional.

Prince (quien escribió “Nothing Compares 2 U” y se la dio a un grupo que apadrinaba llamado The Family, que tocó la versión original), por supuesto, es todo lo contrario: en los años noventa del siglo XX, cuando pasó por un período en el que cambió su nombre por un símbolo “de amor” a prueba de mecanografía y de la fonética y, por lo tanto, fue bautizado por la prensa como “The Artist Formerly Known As Prince” o incluso como sus siglas, “TAFKAP”, hubiera podido parecer que el declive del genio de Minneapolis, que entre finales de los setenta y mediados de los ochenta no podía hacer nada mal, era ya irremediable y conducía aceleradamente al fondo (el uso del símbolo obedecía a consideraciones legales y de identidad artística, pero quedó, en el imaginario popular, como el prototipo de la extravagancia pop contemporánea). El siglo XXI lo trataría bien, sin embargo, hasta que lo mató, luego eso sí de presenciar no solamente la publicación de muchos álbumes (Prince nunca dejó de ser prolífico) sino también una revaloración crítica que sentó las bases para que, a más tardar con su trágica muerte, en 2016, su puesto en la primerísima primera fila del panteón de los grandes innovadores musicales y realmente culturales del siglo XX estuviera garantizado.

Y, sin embargo, debo reconocer que, para mí, la música de Prince (por no hablar de su persona artística) siempre ha sido como un gusto adquirido, algo a lo que no se puede entrar de manera fácil, como al descuido o de manera automática, natural, sino que requiere trabajo, entendimiento y fuerza de voluntad… como un buen whisky, quizás, o como Frank Zappa, Captain Beefheart, Grateful Dead… Entiéndaseme bien: no tengo dudas de que Prince es una figura gigantesca ante la cual no sólo Sinéad O’Connor sino la mayoría de los artistas del rock y del pop se convierten en afterthoughts… pero no me mata. Es algo que me gusta más por decisión consciente que por placer estético gutural.

Y, en cambio, Sinéad O’Connor me cautivó, para no soltarme, desde la primera vez que vi su video de “Nothing Compares 2 U”, como cuento en este artículo que me publicaron en la gran revista ViceVersa y que culmina una pequeña serie (cuyas primeras entregas pueden leer aquí y acá) sobre traducciones intergeneracionales, covers musicales, artistas que interpretan obras de otros y las hacen suyas hasta el punto de hacerlas sonar más propias y más “auténticas” incluso, quizá.

Y es que, como me comentó mi amiga Eleana Velasco por mensaje interno de Facebook, “Creo que escribiste [en el artículo] las palabras precisas al respecto [de “Nothing Compares 2 U”, O’Connor y Prince], y sin embargo, se me hace que la segunda parte de la nota tendría que hablar sobre el cómo los discos de Sinéad eran buenos, pero no se vendieron como el de la canción aquella. De hecho, si yo te tomara la posta, escribiría, ‘De cómo Sinéad O’Connor me puso a escuchar Big Band Jazz en Guayaquil, a los 16 años'”. Sinéad O’Connor merece mucho más, entonces, que ser recordada por una canción, incluso en esta, mi nota. ¡Ojalá me tome la posta Eleana o alguien se anime a tomarla para darle al César lo que es del César y a Sinéad lo que es de Sinéad!
